VoiceThread & Blackboard

VoiceThread is integrated with KU's Blackboard system, allowing instructors to easily add and share VoiceThreads in Blackboard courses and allowing students to easily access VoiceThread within Blackboard. The integration also allows for VoiceThread Assignments, which can be graded within Blackboard and allows for grades to be transferred to the Blackboard Grade Center

Linking to VoiceThread Home Page in Blackboard

Adding a link to the VoiceThread Home Page in a Blackboard course will automatically log students into VoiceThread when they click on the link and take them to their VoiceThread Home Page.

To create a link to the VoiceThread Home Page in Blackboard:

  1. Access a Content Area in the Blackboard course (i.e. Course Documents, Assignments or any menu item where you can add files). 
  2. In the blue action bar, click on Build Content and select VoiceThread[View screenshot]
  3. Enter a name for the link and add a description. [View screenshot]
  4. Add an attachment (optional), set any special access options, and click Submit.
  5. Your VoiceThread link will now appear in the Content Area. Click on the link you just created to activate the link. [View screenshot] 
  6. Click on the VT Home button to finish creating the link to VoiceThread's homepage. [View screenshot]
  7. When students click on the link in the course, they will be logged into VoiceThread and see the full VoiceThread interface. They can create new VoiceThreads or access VoiceThreads shared with them.

Linking to VoiceThread Course Group in Blackboard

Creating a VoiceThread Course View link in Blackboard will automatically create a group for the course and when students click on the link they will see all of the VoiceThreads that have been shared with the course. 

To create a VoiceThread group for a course and create a link to the course group:

  1. Access a Content Area in the Blackboard course (i.e. Course Documents, Assignments or any menu item where you can add files). 
  2. In the blue action bar, click on Build Content and select VoiceThread[View screenshot]
  3. Enter a name for the link and add a description. [View screenshot]
  4. Add an attachment (optional), set any special access options, and click Submit.
  5. Your VoiceThread link will now appear in the Content Area. Click on the link you just created to activate the link. [View screenshot]
  6. Click on the Course View button to finish creating the link to your VoiceThread course group. [View screenshot]
  7. When students click on the link in Blackboard, they will be taken to the course group homepage in VoiceThread and they will see all of the VoiceThreads shared with the course. Students can also access their personal collection of VoiceThreads through the ​VoiceThread menu, and they can add a new VoiceThread to the course group by selecting Add Your Own. [View screenshot]

Linking to an Individual VoiceThread in Blackboard

Creating a link to an individual VoiceThread in Blackboard allows instructors to easily link to a specific VoiceThread in your Blackboard course. When students click on the link they will automatically be taken to the specific VoiceThread.

  1. Access a Content Area in the Blackboard course (i.e. Course Documents, Assignments or any menu item where you can add files). 
  2. In the blue action bar, click on Build Content and select VoiceThread[View screenshot]
  3. Enter a name for the link and add a description. [View screenshot]
  4. Add an attachment (optional), set any special access options, and click Submit.
  5. Your VoiceThread link will now appear in the Content Area. Click on the link you just created to activate the link. [View screenshot]
  6. Click on the Individual VT button. [View screenshot]
  7. You should see all of the VoiceThreads that you own in your account. Click on the VoiceThread that you'd like to share. You can create a new VoiceThread by clicking the Create new VoiceThread button. [View screenshot]

  9. When students click on the link in Blackboard, the selected VoiceThread will open immediately and they'll be able to view and/or comment on the linked VoiceThread. 

VoiceThread Assignment Builder: "Watch a VoiceThread Assignment"

Creating a "Watch a VoiceThread Assignment" in Blackboard allows instructors to create an assignment linked to the Blackboard Grade Center where students are required to watch a selected VoiceThread. Once students watch the VoiceThread, they are credited the indicated amount of points. 

Create a "Watch a VoiceThread Assignment" (Instructors)

  1. Access a Content Area in the Blackboard course (i.e. Course Documents, Assignments or any menu item where you can add files). 
  2. In the blue action bar, click on Build Content and select VoiceThread[View screenshot]
  3. Enter a name for the assignment and add a description. [View screenshot]
  4. Add an attachment (optional). 
  5. Under Grading, choose Yes next to Enable Evaluation. This will create a column for this assignment in the Grade Center. Enter how many points the assignment is worth in Points Possible and select Yes next to Visible to Students. [View screenshot]
  6. Set the access options and click Submit
  7. Your new VoiceThread assignment will now appear in your content area. Click on the link to activate the VoiceThread assignment. [View screenshot]
  8. Click on the Assignment Builder button. [View screenshot]
  9. Select Watch a VoiceThread. [View screenshot]
  10. Click on the VoiceThread that you'd like your students to watch. You can also create a new VoiceThread by clicking on the Create new VoiceThread button at the top of the screen. [View screenshot]
  11. Type a description for the assignment. Check the box next to and share with class and optionally select whether or not you would like students to be able to resubmit the assignment. Click the Create Assignment button. [View screenshot]
  12. You will receive a confirmation that the assignment has been created. [View screenshot]
  13. When students click on the link in the course, they will be able to view the specified VoiceThread. 

Submit a "Watch a VoiceThread Assignment" (Students)

  1. Log in to Blackboard. 
  2. Navigate to your course. 
  3. Click on the VoiceThread assignment link in your course. This will open the assignment. 
  4. Watch the VoiceThread on the right side of the page. Make sure to watch every single comment from start to finish. 
  5. After viewing the entire VoiceThread, click on the Submit Assignment button. [View screenshot]
  6. You will see a message confirming that your assignment has been submitted. You can now navigate back to your Blackboard course. [View screenshot]

Grade a "Watch a VoiceThread Assignment" (Instructors)

By default, once a student has completed a "Watch a VoiceThread Assignment" in Blackboard and has clicked Submit Assignment they will receive full credit for the assignment. If you need to adjust a student's grade, you can do so with these steps:

  1. Click on the Voicethread assignment link in your Blackboard course. 
  2. On the right pane, students who have submitted their assignments (students who have watched the VoiceThread and clicked the Submit Assignment button) will be listed at the top. If you have students who have not yet viewed the VoiceThread, you can click on the Remind all students button to send them an email reminder or you can mouse over individual student names to access the option to send individual reminders
  3. Students who have submitted the assignment will by default have a score of 100%. You can adjust this by clicking on the score next to the student name and entering a new score. Note: If you have set the assignment to be worth less than 100 points, still grade it on a scale of 0-100 percent and the score will be adjusted accordingly in the Grade Center. [View screenshot]
  4. Press enter (return) to save the grade. You will receive a message confirming that the grade has been saved. [View screenshot]

VoiceThread Assignment Builder: "Submit a Comment Assignment"

Creating a "Submit a Comment VoiceThread Assignment" in Blackboard allows instructors to create an assignment linked to the Blackboard Grade Center where students are required to submit a set number of comments to a selected VoiceThread. Once a student makes the required amount of comments and submits the assignment, the instructor can view the student's comments and assign points accordingly. 

Create a "Submit a Comment VoiceThread Assignment" (Instructors)

  1. Access a Content Area in the Blackboard course (i.e. Course Documents, Assignments or any menu item where you can add files). 
  2. In the blue action bar, click on Build Content and select VoiceThread[View screenshot]
  3. Enter a name for the assignment and add a description. [View screenshot]
  4. Add an attachment (optional).

Submit a "Submit a Comment VoiceThread Assignment" (Students)

  1. Log in to Blackboard. 
  2. Navigate to your course. 
  3. Click on the VoiceThread assignment link in your course. This will open the assignment. 
  4. The description and requirements of the assignment will appear in the left frame. When you're ready to insert your first comment, click on the Comment button below the VoiceThread content window. [View screenshot]
  5. Choose how you'd like to comment on the VoiceThread. You can type a text comment, use a telephone to insert an audio comment, record an audio comment with your microphone, use your webcam to insert a comment, or upload a pre-recorded file.   6. Record your comment. You can use the doodle pen to draw on the content while recording. If it's a webcam or audio comment, you can click the Stop Recording button when finished. 
  7. Click Save to save your comment. Click Cancel to delete your recording attempt. 
  8. Once you save your comment, your comment will appear on the right side of the VoiceThread. 
  9. When you've finished adding your comment(s) to the VoiceThread, click the Submit Assignment button. Note: It is very important that you click "Submit Assignment" in order for your instructor to grade your work. If you forget to do this, you can always come back to the assignment page and submit later. You will not need to redo your work. [View screenshot]

Grade a "Submit a VoiceThread Assignment" (Instructors)

  1. Click on the VoiceThread assignment link in your Blackboard course. 
  2. In the right pane, students who have submitted assignments will be listed at the top. Click on the student whose VoiceThread comments you would like to evaluate and grade.  If you have students who have not yet submitted their assignments, you can click on the Remind all students button to send them an email reminder or you can mouse over individual student names to access the option to send individual reminders
  3. The VoiceThread will appear in the larger frame. You can hear/see the student's comments by clicking on the student's icon, or by clicking on the Play comment link under the student's name in the list on the right. [View screenshot]
  4. Enter a grade into the corresponding box for the student. You must enter a value between 0-100%. Note: If you have set the assignment to be worth less than 100 points, still grade it on a scale of 0-100 percent and the score will be adjusted accordingly in the Grade Center. [View screenshot]

VoiceThread Assignment Builder: "Submit a VoiceThread Assignment"

Creating a "Create a VoiceThread Assignment" in Blackboard allows instructors to create an assignment linked to the Blackboard Grade Center where students are required to create and submit a VoiceThread presentation. Once a student submits their VoiceThread presentation, the instructor can view the student's presentation and assign points accordingly.

Create a "Create a VoiceThread Assignment" (Instructors)

  1. Access a Content Area in the Blackboard course (i.e. Course Documents, Assignments or any menu item where you can add files). 
  2. In the blue action bar, click on Build Content and select VoiceThread[View screenshot]
  3. Enter a name for the assignment and add a description. [View screenshot]
  4. Add an attachment (optional).

Submit a "Create a VoiceThread Assignment" (Students)

  1. Log in to Blackboard. 
  2. Navigate to your course. 
  3. Click on the VoiceThread assignment link in your course. This will open the assignment.
  4. If you’ve already created the VoiceThread you wish to submit, select it from the list on the left, and then click the Submit Assignment button on the right. Be sure to check the box next to and share with class if you want your classmates to see your submission. [View screenshot]
  5. If you haven't created the VoiceThread you wish to submit, click on the Create New VoiceThread button at the top of the page. [View screenshot]
  6. Click Add Media and add your media to your VoiceThread (i.e. documents, PowerPoint presentations, images, videos, etc.). You can find more information on creating a VoiceThread at Using VoiceThread and VoiceThread Support: Creating »
  7. Click Comment at the top of the page to record your comments. You can find more information on recording comments in VoiceThread at VoiceThread Support: How to comment ».
  8. When you are finished creating your VoiceThread, click ​Submit Assignment at the top of the page, then confirm by clicking Submit Assignment again on the pop-up.​ Note: If you want to share your submission with your whole class, check the box for and share with class before submitting. If you don't check this box, your submission will only be shared with your instructor.​ You must also click Submit Assignment for your instructor to grade your work.
