Accessing VoiceThread

All KU Faculty, Staff, and Students have access to VoiceThread through KU's institutional license. There are three different ways that users can access VoiceThread at KU: through, through Blackboard, and through the VoiceThread mobile app.

Accessing the KU VoiceThread Website

The easiest way to access VoiceThread is through the KU VoiceThread website at

  1. Open a browser and navigate to
  2. In the upper right-hand corner of the window, click Sign in
  3. In the Username field, enter your KU Online ID. In the Password field, enter your KU password
  4. Click the Sign in button.
  5. You will be logged into VoiceThread and taken to your VoiceThread homepage. 

Accessing VoiceThread Through Blackboard

VoiceThread can be accessed through Blackboard using the VoiceThread LTI integration, which can allow users to log directly into VoiceThread from their Blackboard course. Instructors must create the VoiceThread link in their Blackboard course for students to be able to access VoiceThread through Blackboard.

To create a VoiceThread link in Blackboard:

  1. Log into Blackboard and access the Blackboard course that you would like to add the link to. 
  2. Open a course area, such as a Content AreaLearning Module, or folder. 
  3. Ensure Edit Mode is ON.
  4. On the Action Bar, point to Build Content to access the drop-down list. 
  5. Select VoiceThread from the Create pull down menu column.
  6. On the Create VoiceThread page, enter a Name for the link. 
  7. Type instructions or a description in the Text box.
  8. Attach a file if desired. Click Browse My Computer to locate your file. 
  9. Select Yes or No for Enable Evaluation. Note: If you select Yes, this will enable options for VoiceThread Assignments in Blackboard. You can find more information on VoiceThread Assignments at VoiceThread & Blackboard.
  10. Select Yes to Permit Users to View this Content.
  11. Select Yes or No for Track Number of Views.
  12. Limit the availability of the Item with Display After and/or Display Until dates if desired. 
  13. Click Submit.
  14. Click on the VoiceThread link that you just created to activate the link. Wait until the page loads. 
  15. The VoiceThread Setup page will appear with a list of options. [View screenshot]
    1. Course View - This option will link to a VoiceThread group created for the course. This will display all VoiceThreads that have been shared with the course group. 
    2. Individual VT - This option will allow an instructor to link to a specific VoiceThread that they have created. 
    3. VT Home - This option will log a user directly into VT and take them to their VT home. This is an easy way to provide students with quick access to VoiceThread.
    4. Assignment Builder - This option will appear if the instructor has chosen to enable evaluation in the VoiceThread settings and allows an instructor to create a graded VoiceThread assignment for students to complete.   16. Select the VoiceThread option that best meets your needs. Note: Once you select the type of VoiceThread link, this cannot be edited.
  17. Once you have finished setting up the VoiceThread link, you can return to your Blackboard course. 

Accessing VoiceThread Through the VoiceThread Mobile App

VoiceThread can also be accessed through the VoiceThread mobile app, which is available for Android and iOS devices. 

Installing the VoiceThread Mobile App (Android)

  1. Access the Google Play Store on your mobile device. [View screenshot]
  2. Type VoiceThread in the search bar in the Google Play Store. Select the VoiceThread app. [View screenshot]
  3. Tap the Install button to install the app. Enter your password if prompted. [View screenshot]
  4. Once it has finished installing, touch the VoiceThread icon on your mobile device to launch the app. [View screenshot]
  5. In the app, select Settings. [View screenshot]
  6. Type in the App Settings Domain field and tap Save. [View screenshot]
  7. Select Sign In. [View screenshot]
  8. Type your KU Online ID and password. Tap Sign in. [View screenshot]

Installing the VoiceThread Mobile App (iOS)

  1. Access the App Store on the iOS device. [View screenshot]
  2. Type VoiceThread into the search bar in the App Store. [View screenshot]
  3. Tap Get, then Install, and enter your password if prompted.
  4. Once it has finished installing, open the VoiceThread app. [View screenshot]
  5. Once the app has opened, select Settings. [View screenshot]
  6. Type in the App Settings Domain field and tap Save. [View screenshot]
  7. Select Sign In. [View screenshot]
  8. Enter your KU Online ID and password. Tap Sign in. [View screenshot]

Completing the VoiceThread Account Verification

If you receive an account verification message when trying to log into VoiceThread, this means that you already had a VoiceThread account under your email address before accessing VoiceThread through KU's system or you are trying to connect to VoiceThread through Blackboard and VoiceThread is trying to connect your existing VoiceThread account with your KU profile. Users may encounter the account verification page when they first try to access VoiceThread through Blackboard. 

To proceed through the account verification page, please complete the following:

  1. Click on the Verify by Email button. [View screenshot]
  2. Check your KU email for an email from VoiceThread. You must check your email on the same device that you are attempting to access VoiceThread from.
  3. Click on the verification link in that email. [View screenshot]
  4. You will automatically be directed to and logged in.

You will only need to complete this account verification process one time.
